After being accurately diagnosed, you and of course, your doctor will decide the proper course of action and the most adequate treatment for your type of breast cancer and for the stage of your cancer. When treating the disease it is very important to also choose the option that reduces the most the risk breast cancer recurrence in the future.

You are recommended to base all of your decisions on the specific condition of your disease. Take into consideration all factors and do not forget to choose what will make you feel better about yourself. Probably surgery will be your first option so that you will remove most of the cancerous tissue. There are many types of surgery that you can choose from and also all your decisions should depend on many factors. You do not really know which are the types of surgery that you can choose?
While the lumpectomy is the most common surgery and it is actually the removal of the cancerous tumor, masectomy is the surgery in which the whole breast tissue will be removed. Since the technology evolved and medical techniques have significantly improved, this type of surgery does not affect the muscles surrounding the breasts. If the cancer has spread outside the breasts lymph node removal is required during lumpectomy and mastectomy.
Another very common and very efficient treatment for breast cancer is the chemotherapy.Chemotherapy uses drugs to stop cancer cell growth, both through their destruction and by stopping the division (multiplication). Systemic chemotherapy is taken in the form of pills or by injection into a vein or muscle and so the drugs destroy cancer cells throughout the body. When chemotherapy is placed directly into the spinal cord, in the body inside the abdomen, the drugs act mainly on cancer cells in those areas.

Mode of administration and the type of chemotherapy used depends on the type and stage of tumor to be treated. Radiation therapy is a therapeutic option for cancer which uses high intensity X radiation or other radiation to kill cancer cells. There are two types of radiation therapy. External radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to generate X-rays to be directed to the area where the tumor is located. Internal radiation therapy uses a radioactive substance encapsulated in needles, caps, wires, or catheters that are placed inside or near the cancer. The type of radiation therapy used also depends on the type and stage of cancer to be treated. Currently, there are many ongoing tests of numerous new types of treatments for breast cancer in clinical trials.
