Most progress and innovation is done in chemotherapy with the drugs prescribed to eliminate the cancer of boost your immune system. Let's take a look at the latest drugs that have not since long become available for all breast cancer patients. Chemotherapy is most often just an adjuvant or palliative treatment but combined with surgery, only together are they able to completely and permanently eliminate the cancer. Radiation therapy is also often a third indispensable element.

Studies conducted now are intensely trying to verify and experiment with the use of anti-angiogenesis drugs in the case of breast cancer. These drugs block the formation of blood vessels that tumors feed on in order to grow. We should expect some relevant and encouraging results any day now but for the time we can better look at some drugs that are right here and not just around the corner.

Most progress has been done with targeted therapies which are likely to improve the quality of life of survivors and to speed up the recovery process as well as to prevent recurrence

Abraxane and Albumin-bound nanoparticle drugs are the perfect example of latest miracle workers. Abraxane is actually not a new drug but a way of administering already used drugs. For example Paclitaxel is a drug that is part of many chemo regimes but isn't very effective because it does not dissolve in water so it needs to be dissolved in solvent substances that can have powerful side-effects for the patient. Abraxane solves this problem by making the Paclitaxel dissolve in water through a process called protein-bound nanoparticle technology. Not only does Abraxane not lead to any side-effects but it also makes the drug more effective, as shown by recent studies of women taking the drugs in this combination. Contributing greatly to Abraxane's FDA approval, the study revealed that women who also took the Abraxane responded also twice as much to chemo than women who were administered just Paclitaxel.

Aromatase inhibitors are an example of how also older treatments can be significantly improved through research. These hormone therapies have been confirmed to prevent recurrence of breast cancer in women with breast cancers fed by estrogen better than all traditional drugs.

Ask your doctor for more information about latest drugs and chemotherapy and don't forget to look into clinical trials you can join.

Breast Cancer Survivor Stories

Breast cancer survivor stories can be a source of great inspiration for women still struggling with the disease. This is probably why so many support groups and awareness campaigns on the subject of breast cancer are formed every day. Many online communities also provide many and great survival stories with people talking openly about their experience and then sharing their method of overcoming the cancer. You will see that all of them went through moments of complete depression and hopelessness but somehow, even if just by realizing they have nothing more to lose, these women have found the strength in themselves and in fighting for their loved ones to win the war against breast cancer.
<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->
Such stories include all the terrible details of undergoing treatment, of living with the cancer and of most of the time having to give up their breast. Women who have survived the disease have not forgotten how low they maybe had been at some moments, how low their self-esteem had dropped when losing a breast and how much herself and her family had suffered in their struggle. All these actually just make the survival more powerful and more empowering for other women fighting breast cancer.

breast-cancer-survivor-stories

Let's take a look at two such stories that provide inspiration and teachings about breast cancer.

Marie B. is a woman that has chosen to share her story and her gratitude for overcoming the disease. Her main advice is that all women acknowledge that no case is typical. You can always hope for more than others tell you is realistic in your case. She was diagnosed with a stage 3B breast cancer at the age of 39. She underwent a mastectomy and the chances of survival she was given were at just 49%. What saved her life was her husband searching and documenting from the internet about an integrative care program offered by The Cancer Treatment Centers of America. She was prescribed three chemotherapy drugs and they also provided her with a nutritionist who contributed greatly to defeating the cancer and preventing relapse. Her stage offered very little hope but with the help of her family and with her husband's pro-active attitude she beat all odds and now lives a normal life.

Beth M. is another remarkable example of attitude and hope beating all odds. Beth M. had been given a terminal diagnosis and she was struggling with three different types of cancers in the same time. What makes Beth story even more special is that she is a clown for a living and kept her positive attitude throughout the treatment. For her it all began with exposure to radiation at the age of only one week.  She later developed thyroid cancer. Breast cancer followed after that, spread to the other breast and soon enough she was also diagnosed with lung cancer. As incredible as it sounds she has lived to tell the tale of her incredible struggle. By always monitoring her condition and undergoing immediate treatment for each cancer she managed to eliminate all of them from her organism and her positive attitude helped her resist the strenuous treatments.

Christina Applegate Breast Cancer

Published on Mar 22 2010, in the categories: breast cancer, Causes, celebrities, facts, survivors

As we all know, the breast cancer is a disease (like all cancers) that cause the cells to change and grow without control. Most types of the cancer cells are forming a lump or a mass which is called tumor. Breast cancer it begins in the breast tissue.

<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->

But there are some things we do not know and I am sure many women would like to know if there is a way to prevent breast cancer. I heard this question often but unfortunately for now, there is no guaranteed way to prevent it, and that is why the mammograms are so important. A woman is best overall preventive health strategy besides regular mammograms, it is to reduce the risk factors as soon as possible; avoid at least the known risk factors as obesity, and alcohol. All women should consider the increased risk of this disease associated with use of combined hormone – estrogen and progestin – this is the therapy in evaluating treatment options for menopausal symptoms; (tamoxifen can reduce the risk to develop this disease, among women at high risk).

christina-applegate-breast-cancer

Beside this, the next question would be: how can breast cancer be detected early? This is another common question and really important one. The early stage of breast cancer, when tumor is really small and most treatable and typically it does not produce any symptoms; it is therefore very important for women to follow recommended guidelines for finding breast cancer at this early stage.  The most important physical symptom is a painless mass. 10% of the patients have breast pain and no mass.

christina-applegate-breast-cancer-2

There are also less common symptoms which include changes to the breast  that do not go away, such as thickening, skin distortion or irritation, swelling, and the nipple symptoms : erosion, tenderness, spontaneous discharge, inversion, etc.  American Cancer Society guideline for early stage detection change as a women ages and include mammography and clinical breast examination; for example for the women at the age of 40 or older, the advice is to make annual mammography, annual clinical breast examination and monthly breast self- examination, but at the women between 20 and 39 years the advice is to make a clinical breast examination every three years and monthly breast self-examination.

christina-applegate-breast-cancer-3

As we can see, this disease should be taken seriously. It does not really matter anything when it comes about breast cancer. It does not discriminate; any woman can develop this disease, even men. Many well known celebrities had to fight with breast cancer same like Cristina Applegate . During her teenage year, (even for more then 20 years, she made us laugh), she played in - Married with children - as Kelly Bundy and in 2007, she landed the role on – Samantha Who? – comedy series. She received for her performance,  Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. In April 2008, at the age of 36, Cristina Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer, living quietly with it at first but she said that it was very hard to live with it without telling anyone and that is why she made all public. She found that she has cancer in an early-stage and she immediately took care of it: being afraid of relapse, she made the dramatic decision to have a mastectomy to the both breasts – bilateral mastectomy and after several months of treatment, she cured.

Breast Reconstruction After Cancer

Published on Mar 19 2010, in the categories: survivors, treatment, Useful Info

Most women who opt for mastectomy prefer the reconstruction of the breast because it can be done immediately after mastectomy; at 4-6 months after surgery or even few years after the breast was removed, the breast can be reconstructed and this would be called the late reconstruction of the breast.

Breast reconstruction is a personal choice of each patient and is an alternative to external prosthesis. Before taking a decision, it is good to know and to discuss the advantages and the disadvantages of such interventions.

<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->

The option for an immediate or for a late reconstruction, it is recommended the plastic surgery, because you must consider several factors, including: general health, operators and technical considerations, the probability of the determined treatment by the doctor – radiation therapy or chemotherapy and not least, the desire of the patient. The breast reconstruction can be done either using their own tissues (flaps), either breast implants or a combination of the two methods.

1. The breast reconstruction with flaps – is a reconstructive method using their own tissue from the areas where they are in excess (abdomen, buttocks, hips, back) to create a new breast. This tissue which is moved from one area to another is called a flap. The flap can be moved through a tunnel made under the skin, retaining the vascular of the donor area, or it can be transferred freely by links made micro-surgical with the vessels of the receiving area. The flap transfer may be associated with a breast implant if the transferred tissues do not provide sufficient volume.

2. Implantation of silicone prosthesis under the skin muscles. Through this method, which is especially used at patients with initially very small breasts, it is placing an implant with silicone under the muscle of the operated breast. In the cases of larger breasts, it is used the extension method or the muscle implant.

breast-reconstruction-after-cancer

3. The extension and the late implant of the prosthesis with silicone. Immediately after the breast removal, it is inserted the thing called “expander” under the chest muscle and skin is closing only with a simple suture. The expander is a silicone coating provided with a valve.  After the skin healing (at almost 2 weeks after surgery), the silicone coating can be filled by injection. This process is repeated several times until it reaches enough area of the skin to take over the final implant, for the prosthesis introduction. The expander is based on the skin elasticity property, causing a gradual spread of it. The implants can be filled with gel or saline silicone. You can avoid removing or changing the expander using a permanent expander implant which it can be adjusted post-operative. The reconstruction does not influence tumor relapse and does not interfere with the chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The mammography checks can be continued for the normal breast and also for the reconstructed breast, according to the recommendations that you receive.

She decided to talk right on the eve of Easter which is a period of soul retreats, when we are called to raise prayers, when we need to be better with the others and more with the sadness one who are near us, sick, angry, stressed or simply those who need our support.

When I entered the room from the Institute of Oncology, I saw a woman about 60 years old, who was in the bed groaning because of pain and asking me to get closer. With an extinguished voice she implored not to reveal her name because she does not want that her friends and acquaintances to know about ordeal through she is passing by, about the fact that she is close to the margin of the grave...  she reached a moment which is close to the death.

Two years ago she discovered by chance a breast node that was diagnosed by doctors as cancer at the mammary gland; breast was removed and she was able to overcome this suffering, trough the loving husband, children and grandchildren. Following a complex treatment, apparently escaped the deadly disease. She felt good a period, she had energy and she lived the life full.

The happiness lasted until last October when she began suffering from backache, osteoporosis symptoms and disc pains... displacement. The doctor prescribed some medicines and also massages which did not help her at all; her condition became worse. Following the investigations, she found out that actually, breast tumor has developed multiple bone metastasis.

She was taken to hospital in the arms of her desperate husband who had lost all hope in the healing of his wife. “It never passed trough my mind that I will get into that. Of course, this disease is related to genotype but also of anyone’s character. All my life I had officials. It is well know that if you are seen well and deserve better, of course you also have many enemies. You are useful to “our” man only as long as you are someone in society. If do not represent anything anymore, they betray.

I was a combative person for something beautiful. I sacrificed in the truly meaning of the word. Too late I realized that in this life the charity is not important, especially for a sensitive woman.”, confessed to me the poor woman, being forced to swallow bit of red wine. Friends, colleagues... no one know her pain. She was a perfectionist, generous with everyone but she consumes the heart too much for each failure and frustration. Now she does not want to burden her friends with her suffering.

There is only family beside her. “Let us defend the psychological climate, positive thinking, to forgive and let us not revenge. Let’s us not upset on anyone, to accept people as they are, for that surely is one God. Everyone has the right to fail and to help him. You won’t change the world but you can pray for a stranger.” Our friend is a strong woman and never gave up hope, love and faith. If two months ago she needed help walking, now she walks alone. Above all, prayers to the Lord put her on her feet and after that, treatments.
