Breast cancer is one of the few affections that allow you to perform self examination and reach relevant conclusions. Such a self exam can give you precious information about the texture, position of the breast and possible lumps that might have formed under the skin, in the tissue.

There are two other tests you can do to find breast lumps. These are the regular mammogram and a medical examination. Mammograms are recommended every 2 years for women over 50 but make sure you consult your doctor before to find out about risk factors involved and about the degree to which this procedure is appropriate for you. These checks will help you find the cancer as early as possible and in this way to ensure you have a good chance to completely cure it.

Let's take a closer look at these tests starting with the regular mammogram. A mammogram is a procedure that is can detect a lump even 2 years before it can be seen or felt. What it actually does is give an x-ray imaging of your breasts. The amount of radiation used is too small to be harmful but excessive exposure can represents a certain risk. Mammograms detect the more dense part of the breast but only a radiologist can really see the signs that indicate cancer or other abnormalities.

Another exam option that shouldn't replace but complement or precede the mammogram is having a doctor check your breasts. Once you are over 20 you should have a doctor check your breasts every year or two at most.

The self exam is the easiest and most effortless thing you can do but it also needs to be done much more often than the others. Once you turn 20 you should check your breasts every month and this is hardly an exaggeration. If you do notice abnormal formations don't panic as they are most likely to be just normal breast glands and ducts. If you keep up with the regular self exams you will eventually become very familiar with your breast and you will be able to detect any malformation very quickly. Once you do you should calmly schedule yourself for a doctor's appointment or a mammogram.

What you can look for are any new lumps or thickening of the skin, discharge from the nipples, any changes in the texture of the skin or the size of the breasts and for that matter any change you see in your breast's condition. All these can be indicators of breast cancer but not necessarily. Further testing is essential.

Though far less common than in women, even if it looks incredible ,it is really possible for men to develop breast cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there are about 2000 new cases of  breast cancer are diagnosed in men every year and about 450 men die annually from breast cancer. Breast cancer in men account for about 1 percent of all breast cancer cases.

Most breast cancer in men are caused of benign abnormalities (non cancerous) such as gynecomastia which is a non cancerous growth tissue. Certainly, men, same as  women, should report any changes what appear in  their body and should made the  clinical evaluation. Male breast cancer is not much different then women breast cancer; the symptoms of male breast cancer may include swelling, a breast lump, nipple retraction, skin dimpling, redness or scaling of the skin or nipple, but also nipple discharge.

You know that men have breast tissue, same as women have. Men and women have a small breast tissue with just a few ducts under the nipple and areola, but this is only until puberty because when the girl are reaching puberty, the ovaries produces hormones which cause the breast ducts to grow and cause the lobules, which are the glands that produce milk, but when it comes about a men to puberty, it is the opposite: the testicles produce hormones that are preventing further breast tissue growth.

Men have much less breast tissue than women and because of this, any abnormalities, in the most cases, are easier to find on men than on women.

However, being so less common in men, men ignore the signs of breast cancer believing they are caused by infection or some other cause, because they believe that only women can have this disease but there are also other kind of men who are shamed to find a breast lump and they avoid clinical examination.

Because they have less breast tissue than women have, the tumor does not need to grow much to see something is wrong and the men who experience signs of any kind, they should go to doctor. Men should know that the most often breast abnormality seen is a non cancerous (benign) and this is called gynecomastia which is an increase in the amount of the breast tissue; in teenage boys, the gynecomastia is more common than it is to older men and it is related to changes in the hormone balance.

The treatment for the men who have been diagnosed with this disease, will depend on a number of factors, same as in women breast cancer. The factors may depend of the location or the size of the tumor, the stage of cancer, but it will depend also of the other laboratory test results.

It is known that every cell possesses in the genetic code, information that controls the ability to multiply when the body needs require: development from childhood to adult, then aging process, physiological situations ( hormonal cycle, pregnancy, breast feeding or situations in which tissues must recover as a result of accidents (hitting, crushing, cutting, etc).

In some circumstances, due to conditions which belong to the inconsistency of the information (genetic factors), external physical affections, chemical or biological, the mechanism of the cell multiplication is disturbed totally.

These cells multiply chaotic, completely destroys the place from which they come, as then they colonize other regions (this process is called metastasis). Finally, the body is overwhelmed by the number and consequences of these colonies – metastases and assigns causing death. All these steps cause enormous suffering: pain, bleeding, the breakdown of the vital functions (respiration, digestion, circulation, reproduction, etc).

A recent study shows that one in eight women is suffering from breast cancer. The first signs of the existence of the breast cancer are when it appears some painful breast nodules or bumps. With breast cancer is not kidding! When the first symptoms will appear, go to the doctor until is not too late. If it is no treated, the consequences can be devastating. You can lose your breast or even worse, you can die.

The first issues: the breast size or shape, changes; wrinkles or bumps of the skin. For an easier observation of these issues you have to look in the mirror under a bright light. The breast cancer is seen more often in women over 35 years but you can start checking for even since the age of 25. It is better to track the breast cancer since the first stage and so you won’t risk running out of life. The doctors recommended an inspection every six months.

Methods to prevent the breast cancer - Knowing at least few of the factors that favor the breast cancer, we can intervene to reduce risk. The genetic factors are not identified yet by laboratory tests but in the near future, will be available some test to tell us if we are exposed to risks. However, if we analyze the family tree and we find among the forerunners more than one breast cancer, we must consider as a person at risk; especially in this situation, a lifestyle change can prevent the outbreak of the breast cancer.

Keeping an ideal weight, a rich nutrition with fruits and vegetables which contain substances that stabilize the cell, exercise, birth and breastfeeding of at least 2 children before you turn 28-30 years, no smoking, minimizing radiation of any type, using hormonal contraceptive only under a specialist control. These are some measures of the lifestyle, easy to be "implemented" , that may decrease the risk of breast cancer by more than 60%.

To mark World Cancer Day, officials of the International Union Against Cancer (IUAC) published a report focused on steps that governments and the public can make to prevent this disease. According to The World Health Organization, cancer is responsible for one in eight deaths worldwide, more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.

The organization has also warned us that without major changes, the number of cancer deaths will jump from 7.6 million in 2010 to 17 million in 2030. In the IUAC report experts show that 12% of cancers arise as a result of infection with papilloma virus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer, or liver infections, which lead to stomach or liver cancer.

Of course there are medicines which can cure more or less breast cancer, but still the best known treatment for any disease actually is prevention. Although in developed countries such vaccines that can cure cancer are available, in most countries they almost do not exist.  Experts say that there are many ways to prevent breast cancer and this disease could be avoided if people would change their lifestyles. To reduce the risk of breast cancer you should stop smoking, limit alcohol use, exposure to sunlight and maintain a normal weight through a healthy diet and exercise.

For a woman breast health is vital. That is why regular visits to the doctor for mammograms and adopting a proper diet should be the main priorities for a woman. There are at least five classes of foods recommended mainly to women, to avoid complications of the mammary glands. All vegetables are considered the safest source of vitamins A, C, E and fiber, which protects the body against cancer. Broccoli, in the same class of vegetables, helps to neutralize toxins in the body if eaten fresh or cooked, in order not to lose their properties. Raspberries are also recommended for women, for the content of vitamin C and fiber. Another food recommended by the American specialists is soy in all its forms.

Oranges are rich in vitamins and antioxidant properties, which helps to increase body immunity. Meat and fish oil are ideal for prevention of breast cancer. They are a reliable source of omega-3 fatty acids, which prevent tumor formation and development, and contain large amounts of vitamin D. Sardines, herring, anchovies and mackerel are ideal for every woman’s meals. The foods recommended for breast health have not only the purpose of preventing tumor development, but they also improve and help regulate blood circulation and digestion.

Prevention Of Breast Cancer

It is proven that a healthy lifestyle helps you reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer. Lifestyle changes can lead to prevention of breast cancer in one out of ten cases, shows a study done by the United Kingdom Cancer Research. One of the important measures to be taken is to reduce alcohol consumption.

<-336x280 Large Rectangle - center->

A woman who drinks alcohol daily increases their risk of developing cancer by 6%. Each year, alcohol is responsible for diagnosing breast cancer in 5% of all women with this condition. However, you don’t have to give up drinking altogether. A moderate consumption reduces cancer risk by 18% and, moreover, helps blood circulation.

Fruits are another way to fight against cancer, claim UK experts. A fat diet increases blood estrogen levels and lead to the formation of cancer cells. Thus, a diet based on fruit reduces by almost 30% the risk of this type of cancer. In Japan, where people mostly eat fish, rice and vegetables, all low in fat, the breast cancer rate is the lowest in the world. If such a diet is associated with at least 30 minutes of movement per day it reduces the risk by up to 50%.

From this perspective, one must know that no movement is responsible for 11% of cases of breast cancer worldwide. Another factor that helps the development of cancer cells is hormone therapy. This therapy, in vogue worldwide, increases the risk of cancer by 63%, say experts. If such treatment is initiated, the patient should do some regular checks. Therefore, avoiding this treatment is strongly recommended. It is better for women to deal with the inconvenience of menopause than to resort to hormonal therapies.

Also, if you constantly go to medical examinations, cancer can be discovered since the early phase. After the age of 40 years, it is recommended that at least every two years, the woman to perform a mammogram. In addition, if you find some changes in the breasts you should refer to a specialist for diagnosis. If it is discovered in early stages, breast cancer can be treated in 90% of the cases. But there is a risk that the analysis detected some anomalies that can easily be confused with cancer. When getting informed about the prevention of breast cancer we should also take into consideration the effects of cosmetics and pollution. British doctors have also found that the most important thing that prevents cancer is birth. The birth of a child, especially before the age of 30 years, prevents the formation of cancer cells.

Each year you delay conceiving a child, the risk increases by 3%. Obesity also increases the risk of breast cancer, but only after menopause. Studies have shown that obese women at menopause are 31% more susceptible to cancer than women with normal weight. Obesity increases risk of other cancers as well, it affects the esophagus, kidney and intestine. Amazingly, stress at work is a beneficial factor. Stress prevents estrogen formation and reduces the likelihood of developing cancer by 40%.

Last but not the least factor that helps prevention of cancer is fresh air. Chemicals used in manufacturing cosmetics, which are found in air polluted cities, have adverse effects on endocrine glands. These chemicals increase blood levels of estrogen and it’s scientifically proven that exposure to them has reduced sperm counts in men. Thus, if you choose to opt out of town and move to the periphery you can prevent somehow breast cancer.

Moreover, if these habits are combined with limiting exposure to substances that promote disease, the benefit will be even greater. When it comes to preventing breast cancer there are also a few risk factors that cannot be controlled, such as age and genetic aspects but whether you present risk factors or not it is still extremely important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The easiest things that can be made are controlled diet and maintaining a constant physical activity. You should know that there is a direct link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer and other diseases. How strong is it now remains to be determined through specialized studies. Regardless of what type of alcohol you drink if you really want to protect your breasts, it is good that you limit the alcohol amount to less than one cup a day or avoid alcohol completely.

According to researchers, between obesity, weight and breast cancer there was no obvious connection, but more recently specialists came to the conclusion that the production of estrogen in the fat tissue may be the link between obesity and high risk of breast cancer. Regular exercise helps maintain a normal body weight and, consequently, may help prevent breast cancer. Ideal is that every day to practice at least 30 minutes of exercise.

If a person is not accustomed to practicing regular exercise is recommended for a program on multiple stages, starting with mild exercises and getting that intense exercise. Exercises are recommended such as walking, jogging or aerobic. An extra benefit provided by physical exercise is maintaining healthy bones. There are studies that proved the link between the use of contraceptives and the risk of breast cancer. However, it should be mentioned that the contraceptive pills used in these studies contained high amounts of estrogen, unlike today recommended contraceptives.

Also, according to results of former studies of contraceptive administration for more than 4 years, before having the first pregnancy increases the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women. However, experts who have reviewed all the risk data estimate that the use of contraceptive pill cause more than 4.7 in 10,000 cases of breast cancer. To understand how you can successfully prevent breast cancer, at least improve your odds you should also avoid exposure to pesticides and excessive use of antibiotics.

Molecular structure of pesticides resembles that of estrogen, which means that pesticides may attach to estrogen receptors in the body. There has been also found a link between use of antibiotics and breast cancer – if the treatments you use are more numerous, there is a greater risk of developing breast cancer.
